What is Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 FO)?

Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, often written D365 F&O or D365 FO, is the common name for Microsoft’s finance and operations apps: Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources, Commerce and Project Operations. Microsoft describes them as enterprise resource planning (ERP) delivered as software as a service, built on and for Microsoft Azure.

Microsoft runs the infrastructure, monitors production environments 24 hours a day and releases four service updates a year, in February, April, July and October; an individual update can be paused for one cycle. The apps include features for different countries and languages, and they can be extended through personalisation, Power Platform, the development kit or Marketplace solutions. For a group in the Gulf or Jordan, that means one platform for finance, supply chain, people and projects across its companies and countries, kept current by Microsoft.

D365 F&O implementation: what ConsultTik delivers

We implement and extend Dynamics 365 across finance, supply chain, people and customer operations, starting from your priorities rather than a module list. We configure workflows, approvals and security roles, so people see what concerns them and approve what they are responsible for, and we keep the solution as close to standard as your processes allow, so each Microsoft update stays manageable.

Microsoft’s Success by Design framework reviews an implementation at critical stages, and we build those reviews into the plan from the start. On a finance and operations project, our work covers:

  • Dynamics 365 Finance for the general ledger, payables, receivables, collections and financial reporting
  • Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management for procurement, inventory, warehousing and demand planning
  • Dynamics 365 Human Resources and Project Operations where people and project work belong in the same system
  • Integration with the systems around your ERP, and extensions on Power Platform where the standard product stops
  • Data migration, test cycles, user training and support through go-live
  • Power BI reporting on finance and operations data

AX 2012 upgrade to Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations

Microsoft’s extended support for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 ended in January 2023. Microsoft supports upgrades to finance and operations apps from AX 2012 R2 and R3 once the latest cumulative update is applied: tools bring custom code forward, and a data upgrade can carry your full transactional history into the new system.

Microsoft is candid that these upgrades are complex and that its tooling is a framework rather than a complete solution. Some set-ups, such as those using virtual companies or data partitions, can’t be upgraded today, and AX 2012 RTM isn’t supported. We follow Microsoft’s Analyze, Execute and Validate phases: the upgrade analysis report and data clean-up, the code upgrade estimate, data upgrades in development and sandbox environments, mock cutovers and a full functional test pass before go-live.

When years of history or old customisations no longer earn their keep, a fresh implementation with migrated master data and open balances can be the cleaner route. We set out both options, with the effort and risks of each, before you decide.

ZATCA, VAT and Arabic: local requirements in the Gulf and Jordan

Microsoft publishes guidance on finance and operations apps for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, with the most local features documented for Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In Saudi Arabia, these include VAT, Zakat reporting and phase two of electronic invoicing with ZATCA, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, where each taxpayer and its e-invoicing software must be onboarded with the authority. In the UAE, they include VAT reporting and the FTA Tax Audit File. Where a requirement isn’t covered out of the box, Electronic reporting lets document formats be configured to local rules.

Arabic is supported with a right-to-left layout. Microsoft documents how mixed Arabic and English text behaves in fields such as item numbers, so we agree naming conventions early. Microsoft also supports the United Arab Emirates as a region for finance and operations apps; the location is chosen when environments are created, so we settle data-residency requirements first. We have offices in Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia and also serve Kuwait, the UAE and Oman.

Invoice capture, Copilot and AI agents in Dynamics 365 Finance

Invoice capture for Dynamics 365 Finance creates vendor invoices from invoice images using AI-based recognition on Power Platform. It applies derivation and validation rules before an invoice is transferred to Finance, and an accounts payable clerk reviews and corrects what was captured. Finance customers are entitled to 100 captured invoices per tenant each month, and more capacity can be bought. We set it up as part of accounts payable automation, from intake and validation to approval and posting.

Copilot is now part of finance and operations apps: a chat pane, summaries in Finance and Supply Chain Management, and agents such as the Account Reconciliation Agent, which is in production-ready preview. The Dynamics 365 ERP MCP server lets developers build agents that use ERP data and business logic. We introduce these where they serve a process: AI acts within roles and approvals, and people stay accountable.

After go-live: managed services, reporting and connected products

With four service updates a year, regression testing becomes part of running D365 F&O, so we test critical processes in a sandbox before each update reaches production. Our managed services keep your Microsoft platform running and improving after go-live, with proactive monitoring, optimisation, security and 24/7 support. Because security roles decide licensing, we also review roles and licences as your organisation changes. Power BI and Microsoft Fabric turn finance and operations data into reporting people trust.

Two of our products build on the same apps. SyncroStocks, a Power Apps mobile app for warehouse work such as counting journals, transfers, purchase order receiving, picking and on-hand inquiry, works with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain. DONOR 360, our charity CRM, includes a Dynamics 365 Finance connector.

08 — How we work

How we work

  1. Advise

Start with the business: priorities, fit and the roadmap that serves them. For AX 2012 systems, this includes Microsoft’s upgrade analysis.

  2. Design

Shape the solution around how your teams actually work: legal entities, processes, data, integrations and country features.

  3. Implement

Configure, integrate and deliver on the Microsoft platform, with data migration rehearsed in sandbox environments.

  4. Adopt

Train, support and design for everyday use, in Arabic and English.

  5. Operate and grow

Monitor, secure and optimise with 24/7 support, test each service update and extend with data, automation and AI where it creates value.

09 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations implementation cost?

It depends on scope: the apps and number of users, legal entities and countries, integrations, data migration, extensions and the testing and training you need. Licences are subscriptions, and each user’s security roles decide which licence they need, starting with a base licence such as Dynamics 365 Finance and adding attach licences where needed. We give a scoped estimate after discovery, not a list price.

How long does a D365 F&O implementation take, and what are the phases?

There is no honest single number. The timeline depends on scope, the number of companies and countries, data quality, integrations, extensions and how quickly decisions are made. We work in phases: advise, design, implement, adopt, then operate and grow. After discovery we give a plan with milestones, test cycles and a readiness check before the production environment goes live.

Can we upgrade from Dynamics AX 2012 to Dynamics 365?

Yes, from AX 2012 R2 or R3 with the latest cumulative update applied. Microsoft’s path brings custom code forward and upgrades the database, including transactional history. AX 2012 RTM, and set-ups that use virtual companies or data partitions, can’t be upgraded today. If history or customisations add little value, a reimplementation can be simpler; we compare both routes with you.

Does Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations work in Arabic?

Yes. Finance and operations apps support Arabic with a right-to-left layout, and Microsoft publishes Help for Arabic locales. Mixed Arabic and English text can display in an unexpected order in some fields, so we agree conventions for codes and descriptions at the start. Workshops, training and documentation are delivered in Arabic and English.

Does Dynamics 365 Finance support ZATCA Phase 2 e-invoicing?

Yes. Microsoft documents phase two of electronic invoicing for Saudi Arabia in Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, using its Electronic Invoicing service: tax invoices are sent for clearance and simplified invoices are reported. Each taxpayer must be onboarded with ZATCA to obtain cryptographic stamp identifiers. We configure, test and support this as part of the project.

Where is D365 F&O data hosted?

Finance and operations apps run in Microsoft-managed Azure regions, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE North) is among the regions Microsoft supports for them. New Finance, Supply Chain Management and Project Operations implementations choose the location when their environments are created in the Power Platform admin center; AX 2012 upgrades and existing projects still use Lifecycle Services, which has its own UAE endpoint. Because the location is set at creation, we confirm your data-residency requirements first, taking into account services such as Electronic Invoicing, which Microsoft says may involve cross-geography transfers.

Should we choose Finance & Operations or Business Central?

Microsoft positions Business Central for small and mid-sized organisations. The right choice depends on the number of legal entities and countries, the depth of your supply chain and production processes, transaction volumes, integrations and how far the system must be extended. We assess fit against your processes before recommending either.
